President Aidarous Qassim Al-Zubaidi, President of the Southern Transitional Council (STC) and Vice Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC), met on Sunday with Her Excellency Abdo Sharif, the United Kingdom (UK) Ambassador to Yemen.
The meeting, which was attended by Major General Ahmed bin Breik, Vice President of the STC, Mohammed Al-Ghaithi, Mr. Mohammed Al-Ghaithi; a member of the STC's Presidium and Head of the Consultation and Reconciliation Commission (CRC) supporting the PLC, Mr. Amr Al-Beidh; a member of the STC's Presidium and Special Representative of the President of the STC for Foreign Affairs; and Dr. Nasser Al-Khubaji, Head of the Political Commission assisting the Presidium of the STC; Head of the Negotiations Affairs Unit, reviewed the recent domestic political, economic and humanitarian developments, the fast-moving regional developments at the regional level and their direct implications on the local scene, and international efforts to cease the war and bring about peace in the country.
The meeting, which virtually included Ms Dina Abu Ghaida, Director of the World Bank Group Office for Yemen; the World Bank's Energy Sector Officer for the Gulf States and Yemen; and Minister of Electricity and Energy Mane'a bin Yameen, focused on the public services in the capital, Aden, and other governorates, particularly the worsening power crisis that exacerbates the suffering of citizens amid sweltering summer heat, and the importance of the international community, the World Bank, and donor countries in supporting the government to find urgent and sustainable solutions.
In this context, the meeting discussed a comprehensive strategic plan to address the issues of the electricity sector in the capital, Aden, and the rest of the governorates through executing sustainable infrastructure projects, underpinned by a long-term reform vision to bolster sector stability.
Furthermore, they reviewed technical and financial solutions to alleviate the current crisis, including expediting the financing of alternative energy projects, overhauling infrastructure networks, and revising the master plan to reform the electricity sector in the capital, Aden.
The British ambassador acknowledged the scale of challenges facing the capital, Aden, pledging the UK support for efforts to improve vital public services, particularly electricity, noting that stability in the South is fundamental for achieving a lasting peace in Yemen.
For her part, Ms Dina Abu Ghida affirmed the World Bank's readiness to cooperate with the government and local authority in Aden to implement urgent rescue projects, in addition to working on medium-to-long-term plans to establish an effective and stable infrastructure in the energy sector, highlighting the importance of creating a safe and conducive environment to attract development capital.
At the end of the meeting, President Al-Zubaidi appreciated the constructive roles of both the United Kingdom and World Bank in propping up the recovery efforts in the country, reiterating his call for international partners to boost technical and financial support of vital infrastructure and public services sectors, particularly electricity, as it has a direct impact on improving the citizens' welfare and enhancing societal stability.
The meeting was also attended by Mr Imad Mohammed, office director of the Vice President of the PLC.
